The Oscars

This is not the post I expect it to be. Usually after the Oscars I would be posting all about who won and lost and how everyone looked. This year however, the show was noticeably boring at best. From what I can piece together...the producers were trying to give the show a younger and hip vibe. Instead the show was about as hip as the word hip. Poor Anne Hathaway, you can tell she was trying so hard. After about 5 minutes of the show it was clear this was going to be a long and painful evening. Here is a wrap up of the evening's events:

Anne Hathaway: A for effort. But you're not a comedian. Flubbing lines and changing gowns does not a host make. Plus, if your dresses are all you have to offer then you should have changed twice as much. If you're trying to distract an audience take a tip from Rupaul. Big hair, big make-up and tacky as hell.

James Franco: First he walks out on stage tweeting on his cell phone. I'm all for social media, but you have to address it. Such as "I am tweeting during the show to bring the Oscars on everyone on Twitter." Otherwise it just looks like a stoner on his cell phone. Apart from getting in ugly drag, what did he do? He spent about most of the show looking bored as Hathaway did all the work. Epic Fail James Franco!

A note to the Academy: if you're looking for a young cool stoner, call Seth Rogan. At least he's funny.

Kurt Douglas: at 94 you were the funniest part of the show.

Melissa Leo: There is something about you I just don't like.

The Awards: The winners were everyone who was predicted. "And the winner is...The King's Speech!" *Yawn* I hate that. My favorite part is an upset or a surprise.

My recommendations for next year:

Invite Kanye. His absence made me sad. I like Kanye in all his rude glory. How fun would it have been if he ran on stage and snatched that Oscar from Melissa Leo! Awesome.

Hire Naomi Campbell as the red carpet host. She can just sit high up in a booth with a big bag of cell phones that she'll throw at poorly dressed starlets.

Fall 2011 Fashion Week in New York

Fall 2011 Fashion Week has come and gone in the New York. Overall my reviews are mixed. A+ goes to Rodarte, Jason Wu, and Prabal Gurung. Some designers weren't as lucky. I really like Marc Jacobs (the man) because he seems fun and light hearted. However his RTW collection was filled with poka dot covered victorian pieces. Really? The best thing about the collection was Marc in a blue rubber button down under a gray sweater. Proenza Schouler was another label that missed the mark. Western prairie themed velvet...ummm NO. Not cute. Below is the over view of New York Fashion Week from Style.com. You can also visit the site to watch video's for individual collections.

DOMA

I was going to write about President Obama's decision to attack the Defense of Marriage Act. Instead I refer you to Salon.com and their article about the subject. The article does a great job at pointing out that the support of DOMA is mostly emotional and doesn't hold up well in a court where logic overrides emotion.

Obama sets a marriage trap -- for Republicans

Life Lesson #42

We all have number is our phones that should have been deleted a long time ago. Maybe it's your ex or the toxic friend who ignores you. Either way, we don't delete them. Instead we text them late at night or when we're feeling lonely. Then the next day we kick ourselves and vow it will never happen again...until next weekend. Here's my tip: Change the person's name to a reminder of why you should avoid them. For example, I had a friend that always ignored me. So I changed his name in my phone to 'Shawn' Who Ignores Me. So whenever I would feel the need to call or text I had a visual reminder. So maybe your ex becomes 'Matt Who Gave Me Grabs' or 'Stacy The Psychopath.' Just a helpful life tip from me to you.

Trouble in the Cheese State

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is trying to pass a bill that would severely cute the power of unions in his state. He claims that doing so would help alleviate the $3.6 billion state defecate. The bill has caused outrage from state employees and the result has been massive protests against the bill.

Those are the facts. To be honest, I do not have a strong opinion on the matter. Not being from Wisconsin, I don’t know any of the details about the measure. So why post about it you ask? One detail of this news story caught my attention. 14 Democrat State Senators have left the state to avoid having to vote on the bill. With their absence, the senate can not reach their minimum quorum to vote on the bill. That’s a shitty thing to do. How much of a douche bag do you have to be to skip town rather then vote. Oh...and by the way...voting on bills in THEIR JOB. Isn’t this why people go into politics? It will be interesting to see what will happen when they return and eventually face re-election. I suspect this will come back to bite them in the butt. There is a Public Relations rep out there who will be paid a ton of cash to do some damage control come November.

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is the day for lovers and couples. I don't have  much experience in this department so I wanted to share the experiences of my friends and how they met their long time partners. Using Facebook I did a little research. I asked how they met and how they have stayed together. Here is what I found:

One thing that surprised me was that the internet played less of a role then I expected. Of course there were couples that met online but they were not the majority. The stories I found were diverse. Some had friends set them up, others met for a one time hook up that blossomed into more. As I dug a little deeper though I realized that time was a major factor when considering how they met. Here is some background information to put everything in perspective: I live in Connecticut and most of my friends are in the southern New England area. Connecticut is not a state for young people. The majority of my friends are  couples that have been together for several years and have come here to settle down.  (most of friends have been together 5-10 years on average) Ten years ago the internet was just starting out as a social meeting place. Friends, bars, and hobbies still played a major role in coupling. God forbid you actually had to leave the house and talk to someone face to face. Of all the stories I got,  several of them involve being on a date with another person. I heard a lot of "When we met I was actually there with someone else." Which makes me wonder about the other person...what ever happened to them? One man's bad date is another man's true love.
Here’s what I’ve learned. There is not one proven way to meet a partner. It can happen in a variety of ways as long as you are open to it. For the tiny minority of single guys I know...keep the faith alive. You never know what’s around the corner.

When I asked those friends how they’ve stayed together I got a much more unified response. The most common answer was that both individuals shared a common set of values and goals. It’s also worth mentioning that 99% of the couples that answered are in open relationships. (99% of the couples I know are open) I’m not passing judgment on monogamy but the statistics are not on it's side.

Customize Your Life

With the iPhone now available through Verizon, it seems like the cult will only grow stronger. Before we all become generic clones in the Apple army, here's a way to add some pizzazz and personality. This is pure awesome. Colorware.com is a site where you can have your favorite electronics custom painted. Genius! Plane black is boring... but a sky blue iPad... now that says SWOON. Why hasn't Apple stolen this idea yet? Beware, the prices are not for the faint of heart. So if I win the lotto I'll be the first in line for a sky blue and white (with silver accents) new iPhone 4.

You Can Never Be To Thin?

The above are all pictures from when I was at my thinnest in 2003. The 2nd and 3rd pictures (going clockwise) are from when I was in Europe and I weighed approximately 180-185lbs. I posted these pictures because at the time I didn't like the way I looked. Now looking back... I still agree. Especially when I look at the picture with my shirt off. I admit I loved being able to fit into smaller cloths. Buying a size medium was a thrill but it was a shallow victory. Below is the most recent picture I have of myself from February of 2011. In this picture I weigh roughly 255lbs. I like my body with extra meat. Ideally, I would like to loose about 15-20lbs to be healthier. Either way I'd choose the Joe below over the skinny mini above.

A Vogue's Life

I love this picture. If there was a cutting edge fashion magazine for bears, this is what I imagine the fashion spread would look like. Kind of hot, kind of wierd and you're really not sure what's going on...that's style! A Bear's Life meets Vogue.

Greetings From Florida!

This week I traveled down to Naples, Florida to visit my parents while they were on vacation. Having traveled a bit, I wanted to share some of my best travel tips with you:

1. If you're traveling to a scenic destination (i.e. the beach) always take plenty of pictures of yourself alone. Group shots are great for memories, but a solo picture by the water is great for your Facebook and Bear411 profile.

2. On the subject of taking picture: If it's an important shot you're taking my best advice it to take two. I'm the person in the picture that always blinks and I've learned this leason the hard way. Take an extra shot just as a back up.

3. When you're flying during winter months build in an extra day for travel delays. If a major storm hits that extra day will become very useful. This is also true if your employer is not flexible and you need to be back at work on a specific day.

4. Bring good music. The Destiny's Child greatest hits album #1's is a good choice as is Madonna's Celebration.

5. Beware of germs and drink plenty of water. The airport is a petri dish for germs so a little hand sanitizer does the body good. Water will keep you hydrated on long plain or car rides.

6. Pack Smart. Even if you're traveling to the desert in August, always bring a hoodie and a pair of jeans. You never know when the weather will change or how cold it will be at night. Be prepared for unexpected temps. The last time I was in Texas I spent Friday in the pool and Sunday huddled in from the snow.

7. Don't forget your chargers. Cell phone, IPhone, IPad, Laptop etc... Once you arrive you don't want to spend the whole first day searching for a BestBuy.
